NSW Country Junior Championships 2011

The NSW Country Junior Championship (Under 18) has been won by 14-year-old Paul Russell from Kariong. Paul obtained a clean score, defeating his main rival, Ramon Aich of Dubbo, in an exciting last-round game.

The Under 12 Championship was a close battle between Dunnil Yohannes of Newcastle and Stephen Smith of Mount Victoria. They tied in the tournament and Dunnil narrowly won a two-game playoff.

Australian Schools Teams Championships 2011

The Australian Schools Teams Championships (ASTC), held in the Great Hall at Knox Grammar School, has concluded successfully. The venue proved ideal for this event, with a gallery which allowed spectators to view the games from above without intruding into the actual playing area. Victoria was the most successful state, its schools winning three of the four divisions: Secondary Open (Scotch College), Primary Open (Deepdene Primary School) and Primary Girls (Mount View Primary School). Somerville House from Queensland won the Secondary Girls Division. NSW Schools picked up two third places Knox in the Secondary Open (on tie-break) and Abbotsleigh in the Primary Girls.

City of Sydney Junior Championships 2011

Ties for First Place in All Three Age Divisions

All three age divisions of this year's City of Sydney Junior Championships have produced ties:

   Under 18: Joshua Lau, Sean Gu, Anton Smirnov, Pasan Perera.

   Under 15: Andrew Antony, Clarise Koh.

   Under 12: Rishi Dutta, Kashish Christian.

Playoffs will be held for the titles.

NSW Girls Championships 2011

Mirakla Mithran wins the Under 18 Division

Kashish Christian wins the Under 12 Division

Fourteen-year-old Mirakla Mithran has won the NSW Girls Championship (Under 18) with a score of 8.5/9, half a point ahead of Shirley Gu, with Clarise Koh another half-point behind.

Eleven-year-old Kashish Christian has retained her Under 12 title – her third consecutive win. She scored 8 out of 9 and finished two points ahead of four players who shared second place.

Spring Tournaments 2011

Leo Jiang wins the Sydney Spring One-Day Tournament

Anton Smirnov wins the Sydney Spring Two-Day Tournament

Fourteen-year-old Leo Jiang has won the Spring One-Day Tournament with a clean score, 9 out of 9. He finished a point ahead of 10-year-old Anton Smirnov with 16-year-old Kinto Wan another half point further behind.

Ten-year-old Anton Smirnov has won the Spring Two-Day Tournament with a clean score, repeating his similar win of the Summer Two-Day Tournament. Second was Eric Xu, two points behind.

NSW Junior Championships 2011

Bernard Chau wins playoff to retain NSW Junior title

The three-way tie for the NSW Junior Championship has been resolved in favour of the previous title-holder, Bernard Chau. In the playoff match Bernard defeated both his opponents, Pasan Perera and Harry Ruan, who drew with each other to share second place. Congratulations, Bernard!

Bernard Chau, Harry Ruan and Pasan Perera tie for NSW Junior Championship

Rishi Dutta wins NSW Under12 Championship

The NSW Junior Championship has produced a three-way tie between Bernard Chau (the 2010 champion, aged 15), Harry Ruan (12) and Pasan Perera (the 2010 City of Sydney Junior Champion, aged 14). A play-off will be held for the title. The top seed, Andrew Pan (aged 13), finished half a point behind in fourth place.

Ten-year-old Rishi Dutta won the NSW Under 12 Championship, half a point ahead of Eric Pan.

Winter Tournaments 2011

Paul Russell, Cedric Koh and Jackie Wu win the Sydney Winter One-Day Tournament

Cedric Koh convincingly wins the Sydney Two-Day Tournament

Ramon Aich wins the Orange One-Day Tournament

Thirteen-year-old Paul Russell, twelve-year-old Cedric Koh and fourteen-year-old Jackie Wu shared first place in the Sydney Winter One-Day Tournament.

Cedric Koh followed up his One-Day equal first by convincingly winning the Two-Day Tournament with a round to spare. Methew Yan and Shirley Gu, both of whom had disappointing results in the One-Day Tournament, redeemed themselves by coming second and third in the Two-Day Tournament.

A record of 60 players took part in the Orange One-Day Tournament, which was won by Ramon Aich.

Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament 2011

Knox Grammar School wins the Terrey Shaw Shield

Knox Grammar School has narrowly won this year's Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament and with it the Terrey Shaw Shield. Half a point behind in second place was Sydney Boys High followed another half point away by Scots College.

The Junior Division (for players in years 7 to 9) was won convincingly by Baulkham Hills High. Second was James Ruse High.

Inter-Schools Competitions

The draw for the Metropolitan Secondary Schools Competition (all regions) is now available on the website (click on "Schools" in the menu at left). The competition booklets and result cards will be posted to all schools this weekend. The first round is scheduled for Friday 6 May.

The Primary Schools Competition draw will placed progressively on the website over the next few days. Please monitor the "Primary Schools Draw & Results" page. The competition booklets and result cards will be posted to schools shortly. The first round is scheduled for Friday 6 May, except in zones where the schools get together at a central venue to play all their matches in one or two days (rather than weekly home and away).

Autumn Tournaments 2011

Cedric Koh win Sydney Autumn One-Day Tournament
Kinto Wan and Tim Li win the Sydney Autumn Two-Day Tournament
Ramon Aich wins the Orange Autumn One-Day Tournament

Twelve-year-old Cedric Koh has won the Autumn One-Day Tournament with a clean score, 8 out of 8. Three players shared second place a point behind; they were Erik Ostman, Daniel Cheng and Darryl Chan. The tournament attracted 180 players.

The Autumn Two-Day Tournament resulted in a tie between Kinto Wan and Tim Li, who each scored 9 out of 11. Four players, Austin Shen, Darryl Chan, Daniel Cheng and Methew Yan, shared third place in the 150-player tournament.

Ramon Aich has won the Orange Autumn One-Day Tournament with a perfect score of 9 out of 9, one and a half points ahead of Jonathon Harding.

Australian Junior Championships 2011

Kevin Willathgamuwa Wins Open Under 8 Title

Kashish Christian Wins Girls Under 12 Title

Daniel Zhang Wins Open Under 14 Title

The Under 8 and Under 10 tournaments in the 2011 Australian Junior Championships were the first to finish. NSW players finished first and second in the Open Under 8 Championship. Kevin Willathgamuwa claimed the Open Under 8 title with a clean score. A point behind was Kerry Lin, who dropped only one point (a loss to Kevin).

Kashish Christian won the Girls Under 12 title, conceding only three draws in nine rounds. She won the Under 10 title in 2008 and 2010.

Daniel Zhang won the Open Under 14 title. He too conceded only three draws.

Summer Holiday Tournaments 2011

Five-way Tie in Sydney Summer Three-Day Tournament

Two-way Tie in Sydney Summer One-Day Tournament

Anton Smirnov Wins Sydney Summer Two-Day Tournament

Ramon Aich Wins Orange Summer One-Day Tournament

Morgan Chan (aged 12), Erik Ostman (14), Joshua Lau (14), Tim Li (15) and Daniel Lee (17) have tied in this year's very closely fought Summer Three-Day Tournament; they scored 7 out of 9. Another four players, including 13-year-olds Shirley Gu and Caroline Shan, were half a point behind.

Erik Ostman again shared first place in the Summer One-Day Tournament, tying with ten-year Dylan Siow-Lee. Next was a five-way tie, again including Shirley Gu.

Nine-year-old Anton Smirnov achieved a convincing victory in the Summer Two-Day Tournament, winning every game. Shirley Gu followed up her excellent Three-Day and One-Day results with by finishing clear second. In third place was Dominic Mah, his best result to date.

Ramon Aich added to his tally of tournament victories in Western NSW by winning the Orange Summer One-Day Tournament. He conceded only half a point and won by a margin of one and a half points.

Kevin Willathgamuwa Wins Under 8 Title

The Under 8 and Under 10 tournaments in the 2011 Australian Junior Championships have been completed and NSW players finished first and second in the Open Under 8 Championship. Kevin Willathgamuwa claimed the Open Under 8 title with a clean score. A point behind was Kerry Lin, who dropped only one point (a loss to Kevin). Congratulations to both!

The Under 18 and Under 16 tournaments have reached the halfway 2 and the Under 14 and Under 12 tournaments have just started.
