NSW Country Junior Championships 2023
Ben Gordon wins Under 18 Title
Avinav Sivaraj wins Under 12 Title
Fourteen-year-old Ben Gordon of Charlestown has won the NSW Country Junior Championship title. Ben won all five games in the Under 18 finals, which were contested by six players who qualified from three qualifying tournaments in the north, south and west of the state. In second place, two points behind, was Khaiam Ali of Armidale.
In the Under 12 finals ten-year-old Avinav Sivaraj of Port Macquarie retained the Under 12 title he won last year. Avinav scored 7.5 out of 10, finishing half a point ahead of George Pozharskiy of Umina Beach.

Australian Schools Teams Championships 2023
This year's ASTC was held in Adelaide on the weekend of 2-3 December. NSW teams achieved a second place and three third places in the four divisions.

Primary Schools Competition 2023
The state-wide Primary Schools Competition (for teams of four players), which commenced in second term, has at last concluded. In a strong recovery from three years disrupted by Covid the competition attracted 800 teams from 246 schools (33% more teams and 25% more schools than last year). The competition was divided into 10 regions and 34 zones and over the last few months the zone winners participated in region finals and the region winners then took part in the inter-region finals to determine the country and metropolitan champions, New Lambton South Public School and Beecroft Public School respectively. These two teams then met in the NSW final, in which Beecroft Public School successful.

The 183-player Sydney Spring One-Day Tournament has been won by Nestor Chan, who had previously won the Autumn One- and Two-Day Tournaments. Nestor conceded only half a point to finish a full point ahead of Sayum Rupasinghe.
The Sydney Spring Two-Day Tournament attracted 156 players and in a close finish was won by David Guo. David was undefeated but conceded three draws and finished half a point ahead of Sayum Rupasinghe and Jonluke Corona.
The Orange Spring One-Day Tournament was contested by 38 players and ended in a three-way tie for first place between Sarayu Prakashbabu, Khaiam Ali and Justin Fowler, all of whom have won previous Orange tournaments.
A large field of 95 players took part in the Central Coast Spring One-Day Tournament, which was won by Noyo Akra. Four players shared second place half a point behind Noyo – Griff Brondum, George Pozharskiy, Oliver Jones and Noah Cressey.
The 27-player Wollongong One-Day Tournament was won by 14-year-old Ben Gordon, who finished a full point ahead of Rithvik Yendluri..

Country Secondary Schools Competition 2023
This year's Country Secondary Schools Competition started in first term with 140 teams divided into six regions, and culminated in the finals, which were held online as a round robin between the six region winners. Merewether High School from the Hunter Region won by a margin of 2.5 points from Armidale Secondary College Duval Campus. The remaining four teams all featured in a closely fought battle for third place – there were no tail-enders!

City of Sydney Junior Championships 2023
Seth Peramunetilleke wins Under 18 Championship
Taifeng Lyu and Saisiddharth Naraharasetty tie for first in Under 15 Championship
Lucas Ni wins Under 12 Championship
NSW Junior Champion Seth Peramunetilleke won the City of Sydney Junior Championship (Under 18) with a round to spare, conceding only two draws to score 7 out of 8. Anh Quan Nguyen was second ahead of Jean Rusakov in third place.
The Under 15 Championship attracted 49 contestants and finished in a tie for first place between Taifeng Lyu and Saisiddharth Naraharasetty, who scored 6.5 out of 8. They will playoff for the title.
Lucas Ni won he 51-player Under 12 Championship a full point ahead of Rudra Verrma, Enoch He and Callan Arav.

NSW Girls Championships 2023
Joy Liu wins Under 18 Championship
Ella Woon wins Under 12 Championship
Fourteen-year-old Joy Liu has won the NSW Girls Championship after a closely fought contest. She finished half a point ahead of 2022 Under 12 Girls Champion Linda Qian, who was followed, half a point further behind, by four players, including last year's NSW Girls Champion Chelsea Huey.
The Under 12 Championship was won by Ella Woon, who is new to NSWJCL tournaments, having played in only the immediately preceding Spring One-Day Tournament. She scored 8 out of 9, finishing a point ahead of Katie Zeng.

Metropolitan Secondary Schools Competition 2023
The 2023 Metropolitan Secondary Schools Teams Competition, which commenced at the beginning of second term, has concluded. The winners of the three grades were as follows:
Senior Grade (Years 11-12): North Sydney Boys High School
Intermediate Grade (Years 9-10): Knox Grammar School
Junior Grade (Years 7-8): Baulkham Hills High School
A total of 413 teams from 93 schools took part in the competition – 113 more teams and 20 more schools than last year. The teams were divided into four regions and then into divisions of approximately 8 teams. Division winners qualified for knock-out region finals, the winners of which progressed to the inter-region finals in each grade. For full details click on "Schools" in the menu at left.

Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament 2023
Sydney Boys High School wins the Terrey Shaw Shield
This year's Secondary Schools One-Day Tournament proved so popular that we had to close entries early – 102 teams from 32 schools took part, including schools from Wollongong and Nowra. This was 46% more teams than last year, which was 46% more than in 2019 (the tournament was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to Covid)..
Sydney Boys High School won the Open division and with it the Terrey Shaw Shield, which the school had last won in 2019. The team scored 15 out of 18 and finished half a point ahead of North Sydney Boys High. Sydney Grammar School came third another one and a half points behind.
The Junior Division (for Years 7-9) ended in a tie between Knox Grammar Schools and North Sydney Boys (B team), with Knox Grammar being declared winners on tie-break.

Alexander Hoffmann wins Wollongong Winter One-Day Tournament
Michael Wang (aged 14), Noyo Akra (16) and Callan Arav (9) tied for first place in the 171-player Sydney Winter One-Day Tournament. In an exceptionally close finish they each scored 7.5 out of 9, only half a point ahead of another nine players.
The 165-player Sydney Winter Two-Day Tournament finished dramatically with both leaders losing their last-round games. Jordan Raffoul (aged 16), who was leading Daniel Wang (12) by half a point, lost to Jayden Arav (14), who thereby joined him in first place. Daniel lost to Jean Rusakov (13), which left both of them sharing third place.
Mikaere Pora (aged 14) has won the 124-player Central Coast Winter Tournament, repeating his Autumn Tournament victory with the same score of 7 out of 7.
The Orange Winter Tournament attracted a near record of 61 players and produced a three-way tie for first place between 15-year-old Wyatt Wieland and two 13-year-olds, Sarayu Prakashbabu and Justin Fowler.
Two visitors from Germany topped the Wollongong Winter One-Day Tournament – Alexander Hoffmann came first with 7.5/8 and his sister Sophia came second half a point behind him.

Seth Peramunetilleke wins Under 18 title

Reyaansh Chakrabarty wins Under 12 Championship
Sixteen-year-old Seth Peramunetilleke has won the NSW Junior (Under 18) Championship by a full point margin over 14-year-old Saisiddharth Naraharasetty. Seth conceded only two draws to score 8 out of 9.in the ten-player round-robin tournament. Three players, including ten-year-old Yifei Hu, shared third place, 1.5 points behind Saisiddharth.
The Under 18 Reserves Division was won by 14-year-uld Taifeng Lyu, a relative newcomer to our tournaments – his past experience has been mostly online. He conceded only one draw (to Savin Peramunetilleke).
The Under 12 Championship was won by Reyaansh Chakrabarty, who tied for the championship last year but lost the playoff for the title. He finished with 9 points out of 10, 1.5 points ahead of Callan Arav, the same winning margin as in the Under 18 Title and Reserve divisions.

NSW Junior Championships 2022 - Under 18 Reserves Playoff
Jean Rusakov wins Playoff to qualify for 2023 Title Division
The long running playoff for the 2022 NSW Championship Under 18 Reserves Division has at last been completed. An initial two-game match between the tournament's joint winners, Jean Rusakov and Harvey Zhu, was tied with two draws, as was a second match. In the third match the first game was drawn but the second was won by Jean when his opponent's smart watch received an audible message, which meant an automatic loss for him – an unfortunate end to a long and evenly-balanced contest. Jean's win qualifies him to play in this year's NSW Junior Championship Title Division (which both players are may well qualify for anyway as their improving ratings are likely to place them amongst the top ten highest rated entrants in this restricted-entry event).

Inter-Schools Competitions
Metropolitan Secondary Schools Competition: The draws for Met East, Met North and Met West Regions are now available – except for Met North's Central Coast divisions, which will be held in one-day format (on Tuesday 16 May). City of Sydney Junior Championships 2022 - Under 15 Playoff
Yifei Hu wins Playoff for City of Sydney Under 15 Title
Following the tie between Yifei Hu and Anh Quan Nguyen in last October's City of Sydney Under 15 Championship a two-game playoff for the title has been held. It was won by Yifei, who is only 10 years old, with a win followed by a draw.

Sam Rivett wins Orange Autumn One-Day Tournament
Chamathsara Mendis (from Dubbo) and Tristan Dyson (a Newcastle local) tied for first place in the 21-player Newcastle Autumn One-Day Tournament. They each scored 7 out of 8 and finished a point ahead of Maxim Micevski.
Thirteen-year-old Nestor Chan has won the Sydney Autumn One-Day Tournament. He gained a half-point lead in Round 6 and maintained that same leading margin for the the remaining three rounds despite conceding two draws. Second was Anh Quan Nguyen and third place was shared by 11 players. A large field of 152 players took part in the tournament.
A record field of 131 players took part in the Central Coast One-Day Tournament, which was won by Mikaere Pora with a picket-fence score of 7/7, half a point ahead of Griff Brondum.
The Sydney Autumn Two-Day Tournament attracted 168 players – even more than the previous week's One-Day Tournament. Nestor Chan repeated his One-Day success, again conceding only two draws. Anh Quan Nguyen was second again, but this time sharing that position with Marcus Li.
A record of 66 players took part in the Orange Autumn One-Day Tournament. It was won by 16-year-old Sam Rivett, a first-time winner, who finished half a point ahead of veteran Khaiam Ali.

The large number of entries for our Summer tournaments indicates that players are eager to get back to face-to-face tournaments after three years of Covid disruption.
Our first tournament of the year, the Sydney Summer Three-Day Tournament, attracted 88 players, over 15% more than the last Summer Three-Day Tournament (in pre-Covid 2020). The tournament was won by 17-year-old David Miller, who scored 7.5/9 (six wins and three draws).
The Sydney Summer One-Day Tournament was contested by 143 players and was won by 10-year-old Harvey Zhu, who scored 8 out of 9 and finished half a point ahead of Ralph Tsui and Jean Rusakov.
The Orange Summer Tournament attracted 34 players and ended in a three-way tie between Chamathsara Mendis (aged 15), Braydon Bouffler (13) and James Fowler (17), who each scored 6.5 out of 8.
The 122-player Sydney Summer Two-Day Tournament was closely fought for all its 12 rounds and finished in a two-way tie between David Guo and Ralph Tsui with 9.5 points each.
A large field of 90 players took part in the Central Coast Summer Tournament, which ended in a tie between Jean Rusakov and Tristan Dyson with 6.5/7 each.
A record of 36 players took part in the Wollongong Summer Tournament – 50% more than last summer. Three players, Aarav Shahriar, Clancy Sloan and Emma Zhang, tied for first place, each with 6 points out of 7.

Oceania Zonal Championships 2023
The 2023 Oceania Zonal Championships, which took place in Melbourne in late January, attracted a large field of 295 players including 22 juniors from NSW. One of several outstanding results amongst these was Alaina Vincent's equal third place in the Womens Championship.
The Zonal was won by GM Temur Kuybokarov of WA and the Womens Zonal by WGM Julia Ryjanova (Vic).

Yifei Hu wins Under 12 Open Title

The 2023 Australian Junior Championships were held in Melbourne from 12 to 20 January and NSW players secured two titles, three second places and four third places.
Yifei Hu won the Under 12 Open title and Reyaansh Chakrabarty winning the Under 10 Open title .

Australian Open Championships 2023
Jayden Arav wins Australian Minor Championship
The 2023 Australian Open Championships, which were held in Perth in early January, included several subsidiary tournaments, one of which was the Australian Minor Championship. This tournament, for players with ACF ratings below 1600, was won by 13-year-old Jayden Arav from NSW. He was helped by his 12-year-old brother Nathan, who defeated the tournament leader in the last round, allowing Jayden to pass him and win the tournament by half a point. Nathan finished in equal second place.
